D&D Beyond Character Sheet
The official character sheet is tough to beat, because it does it so well!
When looking at character sheets for D&D 5th edition, you will undoubtedly come across the pencil & paper version that comes standard. It is easily recognizable, stands out in a crowd, and just plain works. When looking for a virtual version of that, it comes to reason you may look towards the official resource to do it.
By some blindspot, or not venturing far enough from my comfortable rock, I neglected this for far too long. Upon a friend’s recommendation, I tried it out. I was skeptical at first, but decided to give it a go with my very homebrewed character for our Extra Life stream game.
Imagine my disbelief when everything just worked. The first time. Homebrews and all.
I created Cherno of Tângors on there, had my DM add me to the campaign and I could add homebrew material as needed. It automatically let me choose the spells, proficiencies, equipment and everything else that my character needed! Everything shows up as an easy to use character builder, with drop downs for everything from races to skill sets, to smart spell selections. This does come with a caveat though, very little is free. Like all (legal) resources only the 5th Edition Systems Reference Document (SRD) material is available to players for free. However; unlike other apps and programs, since D&D Beyond is the official toolset for 5th Edition D&D you can purchase the digital editions of the different books and expansions. When you do so, all the content added to the game from that is added to what you can use when building characters. As well, any content you homebrew in D&D Beyond can be added to your character.
Paying members can also add players to their campaign, and add public homebrew content to their campaign for players to use. I think this is a wonderful addition, as it fosters and works with homebrew friendly campaigns! This lets homebrew content be accessible to all players, and homebrew creators have a chance to have their content play-tested. It also allows a DM to keep an eye on character sheets in their campaign, and allows players to help out one another (all campaign character sheets are available to everyone else by default - so this can be good or bad depending on your players and campaign).
Getting back to the character sheets, making a character is easy and simple with the wizard that D&D Beyond provides. The character sheet itself is simple to navigate (as it matches the pencil and paper, and organizes itself well), and has added features like clicking on content to show helpful guides on what abilities are used and when, and adding damage or healing HP points, one press short/long rest buttons that open up slots based on your character, and an export button to make (freaking AMAZING) editable PDF character sheets. A great resource for new players and DMs alike!
I can truthfully say I highly recommend the D&D Beyond Character Sheet, and will be hard pressed to find something better.
